King James leads NASSA under 15s youngsters to National glory! - 18/04/2012

Newham All Star Sports Academy (NASSA) under 15s basketball team replicated the feat of their youngest after winning another Gold in the National Finals 2012 at Nottingham.

NASSA managed to come from behind to avenge their 2011 finals loss at the hands of Manchester  Magic after defeating Haringey Hawks in the semi-finals earlier in the day.

Against Haringey, NASSA opened up a 13-basket lead by the end of the second quarter and they continued in the ascendancy.

The third quarter saw Haringey begin to put pressure on NASSA, but capitan and man-of-the-match Jonathan James led by example scoring several baskets on their way to 94-71 win to secure their place in the final.

And that proved a tough encounter from beginning to end against Manchester, with NASSA trailing for the majority.
They lost Capitan James at the beginning of the final quarter after being fouled out, but Calvin Kintu’s 14 points helped them secure a 90-87 victory!

NASSA Director Natasha Hart said: ‘’This is the fifth year on the trot that we have achieved the place in the national finals. ‘’The players, coaches , volunteers and parents have worked consistently hard and I am pleased that has given them the result they deserved.’’

NASSA Youngsters strike Gold to rival elders - 18/04/2012

Newham All Star Sports Academy (NASSA) is celebrating getting gold in the National England Basketball under 13s Finals 2012 at Nottingham!

The under 13s did battle against Leeds Carnegie in the semi-finals in their opening clash. Both sides matched basket for basket in the opening stages and strong drives to the basket by Sam Kato, Kevin Boatey, Frederick Merdioro, Enock Denkyirah and Demilade Adenuga resulted in some excellent lay-ups.

Nifty footwork from Kristofer Jankovskis helped to keep the pressure on Carnegie and with a place in the final at stake, NASSA scored those much needed baskets to win by 75 baskets to 60 taking them through to the finals against reigning champions Manchester Magic!

The lead changed hands on several occasions in the final, though NASSA had edged ahead by the end of the second quarter.

Fatigue hit the youngsters in the third as both sides began to concede a number of fouls, though Magic retook the lead.
Great plays from Kato and much needed points from Boatey helped to close the gap and despite a valiant effort by Magic it was NASSA who came through to take the gold with a final score of 75 baskets to 68 to defeat last season’s winners in what was a fantastic week-end for the academy.

Kato was the MVP for NASSA with 30 points in the final, and was well supported by team-mate Boatey who added 29 points.
